Easy apple strudel

The much-loved traditional Viennese strudel gets a 21st century makeover by using bought puff pastry for time-saving and convenience. Serve with cream for a warming dessert on a chilly night.

What do I need?

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup sultanas
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • Cream to serve

How do I make it?

  1. Preheat oven to 200C.
  2. Peel and core apples and cut into thin slices.
  3. In a bowl, combine apples, sultanas and sugar together, ensuring the apples are well coated with the sugar.
  4. Roll the pastry with a rolling pin and place on a greased baking tray.
  5. Spoon apple mix onto the middle of the pastry lengthways, leaving a 5 cm gap at each end for folding.
  6. Fold the pastry and seal all edges by pressing firmly with your fingers.
  7. Combine egg and milk together, with a fork and use a pastry brush to brush on the top of the pastry.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
  9. Serve with cream.
