The Hill Street Story
Hill Street Grocer was founded by the Nikitaras family in 2001, when the original IGA store at 109 Hill Street, West Hobart, was transformed into a beautiful gourmet grocery store.
Over more than two decades, the family has nurtured and grown the business to become Tasmania’s leading independent food retailer with stores bringing happiness through great food throughout Tasmania.
In 2015 Hill Street launched Hill Street Home, a store-within-a-store at our West Hobart, Sandy Bay, Latrobe, Longford and Devonport sites.
Hill Street Home brought together home and kitchenware, an in-house florist, Hill Street Flowers, local handmade chocolates and the Hill Street Hamper range.

2001 Hill Street West Hobart opened
In 2021 Hill Street acquired the Wursthaus, a celebrated Hobart butchery, smallgoods and gourmet food manufacturer in Cambridge. Wursthaus now supplies all Hill Street stores with high quality meat, smallgoods and ready-to-eat meals. Our kitchen also make our hand-made pies, quiches, cakes and more, including preparing our famous Christmas and Easter food offerings each year!
Over the years Hill Street has won numerous state and national retailing awards and many of our stores have been named national Retailer of the Year by the IGA group, several years running.
Along the way we welcomed other family members and investors, including the Longmore and Rockefeller families, to create a strong brand and a business committed to giving Tasmanians a real choice about buying their groceries from a local family business.
Today the company employs over 800 people across 11 sites and continues to be owned by family members and lead by our CEO Steve Longmore. Learn more about our team here.
