Something we’re always happy about is the arrival of mandarins into the store. While the days are getting colder, it’s great to see these lunchbox staples and all-round healthy sweet treat back in season. Here are five facts about mandarins you might not know, and five delicious recipes using them.

2. Mandarin season runs over the colder months, from May to August – that’s not long, so enjoy them while they’re available.
3. Mandarin seeds were on board the First Fleet when it arrived in Australia in 1788.
4. Today there are 2.3 million cultivated mandarin trees in Australia and we eat 70,000 tonnes of mandarins a year.
5. Mandarins contain polyphenols, antioxidants which have protective effects against cancer, inflammation, and heart disease.

Five ways to use them
Mandarins can be used in a similar way to oranges in many recipes but have a subtler taste and are prettier as a garnish due to their smaller segments. They pair well with cream, cream cheese and custard and make a delicious citrus curd.
