Treats and Tricks for Halloween, done your way

Don’t want to be a wet blanket on Halloween? Here are some ways to join in with less of the candy and hype.

Halloween falls on Thursday 31 October. While its associations with the occult aren’t welcomed by all, and many feel it’s an American tradition (actually it has its origins in the Celtic festival of Samhain some 2000 years ago), Halloween has become an opportunity in Australia for communities to dress up, have fun and meet their neighbours – something that doesn’t happen so much these days. And if you have small school-aged children, the pressure to join in the celebrations can be quite intense!

If you don’t want to go all-out but still want to do something fun, there are a few ways you can do Halloween, your style.

Healthier treats
If you would rather not add to the sugary sweets load which is almost unavoidable if your child goes trick-or-treating, have a fun event at home with these very cute healthier treats for the spooky season.

Decorate your door
Many neighbourhoods are embracing trick-or-treating, and if you would like to participate, decorating your front door in a Halloween theme has become a way to signal to your neighbours that you welcome a knock at the door.  A paper garland of cut-out bats, black cats, pumpkins or ghosts is an easy way to do this.

Carve a jack-o-lantern or make a wreath
If you’re feeling more creative you can carve a traditional jack-o-lantern and leave it at your front door with a candle or light inside, or create a festive foliage wreath decorated with a spooky theme which you can swap out for Christmas baubles once it’s time to put up Christmas decorations. And here are our tips for making sure your jack-o-lantern keeps looking fresh and nice.

Be prepared!
If you are taking part and have decorated accordingly, be prepared for lots of knocks at your door. Of course, lollies are the treat of choice – and individually wrapped ones are preferred in this post-Covid era.  At Hill Street we have a large range of wrapped lollies in bags from the Market Grocer – including a Trick-or-Treat mix, and all the traditional favourites like fizzers, love hearts, fruit chews and rainbow lollipops.
