Don’t miss these local seasonal favourites
With the local Tassie season short and sweet, these are our homegrown summer favourites to eat and enjoy in abundance, right now.
We’re blessed in Tasmania with access to fresh produce grown within a few hours of where we live. But with Tassie’s cooler climate the season for some of our local favourites is short-lived.
So enjoy these now: they’re here for a good time, but not a long time.
Cherries
The Tasmanian cherry season kicks off in mid-to-late December and continues through to mid-February, with its peak through to mid-to-late January.
We continue to have great supplies of top-grade cherries from our local suppliers like Hansen Orchards. Treat yourself to a 2kg box or a nice big bag and enjoy a sweet burst of flavour and a good dose of health-giving antioxidants.
Apricots
If you’re a born-and-bred Tasmanian you might have an apricot tree in your childhood memory that produced the best apricots. Each summer when apricots come into season you try to find one that comes close.
Tassie’s local apricot season is short, with fruit available from mid-January to the end of February. The most prized apricot variety in Tasmania is Moorpark, an heirloom variety which may just bring back your childhood memories.
Berries
Due to innovations in greenhouse growing, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries do have an extended season these days here in Tassie before supply switches back to the mainland. However, the best time to eat local berries is still the height of summer when berries are at their lushest and cheapest.
Tomatoes
Nothing is better than summer-ripened tomatoes and our local suppliers are now in the flush of summer, harvesting everything from small grape and cherry tomatoes to the large, colourful heirloom varieties.
Combine all colours and sizes in a salad with torn basil, some burrata and a peppery Tasmanian olive oil to capture the taste of summer.
