The five and five of lemons

The humble lemon really is the most useful fruit in your kitchen. From cleaning to curd, it truly is an amazing ingredient.  Here are five things you might not know about lemons, and five delicious ways to use them.

In season now over the winter months, lemons add brightness to our kitchens, zing to dishes both sweet and savoury, and can even perform double duty as a cleaner and antibacterial agent.

Here are five facts you might not know about lemons:

1.   The average lemon will contain three tablespoons of juice.

2.   A lemon tree’s lifespan is about 50 years, but with the right care they can live to be 100 years old.

3.   Lemon juice is naturally antibacterial and can be used in many household applications from cleaning grout to freshening your dishwasher.

4.   Limoncello, the Italian liqueur, is traditionally made with Amalfi lemons from the Amalfi coast, which are twice the size of an average lemon.

5.   Lemons and limes were carried and consumed on all sea voyages in earlier times, to prevent scurvy.
