How to test if eggs are fresh … kitchen helper
If you’re unsure whether an egg is fresh, there’s a couple of very simple tricks to find out.
Firstly, put the egg in a cup of water. If it sinks, it is fresh and if it floats it means the egg is old. Eggs that can float in water are caused by the air cell inside the egg enlarging enough to make it buoyant. An egg being “old” doesn’t necessarily mean that it is bad and can’t be eaten. Instead have a look at the egg and check that the shell is dry and undamaged. If it is ok, crack it into a clean white bowl and check for any signs of discolouration of the yolk or whites. Runny yolks or whites also indicate that the egg is old and the quality has declined. Your nose is also a valuable aid in determining whether an egg is safe to eat. If there’s any abnormal smell, toss the egg. Of course, if you are in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution rather than risk food poisoning.
