Kitchen helper - how to store your cheese at home

In advance of Solstice with the Studds, our fabulous cheese events on the 14th and 15th of June, we’re giving you a few cheese tips from Ellie and Sam Studd’s book, The best things in life are cheese. This week, we tell you how to care for your cheese when you bring it home. To find out more, read on.

Ellie and Sam Studd’s book, The best things in life are cheese, is a 304-page book packed full of info about cheese – how to buy it, how to look after it and how to eat it, and is available at your local Hill Street Home for $44.99. If you come to Solstice with the Studds, it’s included in the ticket price. You can book your stop at the table here.

The section on cheese storage runs a few pages but the most important takeaway is what to do with your lovely piece of cheese as soon as  you get home from buying it at Hill Street. Sam and Ellie advise:

1.   Unwrap it and let it breathe! Storing cheese in plastic wrap long-term can make it soggy and smelly and increases the chances of mould forming.

2.   Rewrap it in cheese paper or parchment (baking) paper to allow airflow and humidity. We sell Formaticum cheese paper at our West Hobart store and other selected stores – check with your local Hill Street.

3.   Place the cheese in an airtight container (as small as possible according to the size of the cheese, to prevent it drying out), and place in the fridge.

Optional upgrades:

  • Line the bottom of the container with a damp paper towel or sushi mat.
  • Air out the container every 2-3 days.
