How to soften brown sugar … kitchen helper

Brown sugar can clump and turn brick-like if not stored properly.  Want to know how to soften it in 20 seconds?

Place the brown sugar in a microwave-safe bowl. Dampen a paper towel and cover the bowl with it.  Microwave on high for about 20 seconds, and then break up the brown sugar with a fork.  It might need a few 20 second bursts to completely soften. You can pulse the sugar in a food processor to further break it up if needed.

If you don’t have a microwave, put the brown sugar in a Ziploc bag with a piece of bread, seal, and leave for 24 hours.  The moisture from the bread will soften the sugar and allow you to break it up.

To keep brown sugar soft:

·      Always store in an airtight container, not its original packaging.

·      Pop a marshmallow or a small piece of sliced bread into the container. The moisture in these will keep the sugar soft.
