How to make your own Christmas crackers … Christmas helper

Here’s a cute idea to get the kids involved in a little Christmas crafting.

Over the next few weeks save the inner cardboard rolls from kitchen paper, cling wrap, foil or baking paper rolls.

Gather together what you might like inside the crackers:

  •  jokes
  •  paper hats
  •  lollies
  •  trinkets
  •  silly tasks – eg ‘Hop on one leg around the table while singing Jingle Bells’ – hopefully grandma will get that one…
  •  ribbon

You will also need:

  • double-sided tape
  • coloured crepe paper or Christmas wrapping paper
  • bon bob snaps (optional – these are available online).

Now assemble your crackers:

  1. Cut each cardboard roll into 15 cm lengths.
  2. Cut the paper into 30 cm x 30 cm squares.
  3. If you want your cracker to “crack” when pulled, thread a bon bon snap through each cardboard roll, making sure part of it hangs out each end.
  4. Put a hat, joke, silly task, lollies or trinket into each roll.
  5. Place the roll in the centre of a square of paper, then roll up and close the join neatly with double sided tape. Twist the remaining paper at each end and tie with ribbon.
  6. Decorate the outside of the crackers as you like with glitter, stickers, sequins or paint, or make your crackers into place cards by adding the person’s name in an artistic way.
