How to help your Mother’s Day blooms last longer

With the beautiful range of flowers available for Mother’s Day at Hill Street, there are a few tips you should know to extend the life of your bouquet. Read on to find out how.

You’ve received a stunning bouquet of flowers for Mother’s Day. Follow these tips to maximise their life in the vase.

1.  Always take off the wrapping and snip off the ends of each stalk at an angle with sharp secateurs. This will assist water uptake. Don’t be tempted to snap them by hand as this will leave a ragged end and encourage rotting and bacteria. Similarly, make sure that all leaves which will be below water level in the vase, are stripped off.

2.  Add a flower preserver to your vase water. You might receive a sachet with your bouquet, but if not, you can make your own with this recipe.

3.  Always use a big enough vase, using the rule of thumb that the flowers’ total height should be one and a half to twice the height of their vase. For example, for a 30cm high vase, your flowers should be 45 - 60cm tall. This will ensure your flowers have enough water and the vase will support the stems, as well as having a balanced appearance in the vase.

4.  Change the water regularly to avoid bacteria building up, every 2-3 days.

5.  Keep flowers cool, out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. If you like, move them to a cool place in the house at night such as the laundry, or covered area outside, to avoid them becoming overblown.
