Our love affair with avocados is real, we just can’t get enough of them and their creamy goodness. But there is a stumbling block in our relationship and that’s how quickly they turn on us. You know what we mean, one minute the avocado is hard and unripe and before you know it your fruit bowl is home to a brown, mushy mess. It honestly seems that the window for peak avocado ripeness is about 5 minutes. If you’re sick of wasting avocados you can freeze them. Read on to learn how.

Freezing avocados while they are at their peak ripeness means that you’ll always have a stash of avocado on hand. To achieve the best results, follow these steps:

Freezing avocados in halves or quarters

1.     Cut avocado in half and remove the seed.

2.     Peel the skin away from the halves or use a spoon to scoop out the flesh.

3.     Slice in quarters if desired or leave in halves and place into a resealable bag.

4.     Remove as much air as possible from the bag before sealing.

5.     You can brush the avocado with lemon juice before sealing if desired.

Freezing mashed avocado

1.     Cut avocado in half and remove the seed.

2.     Peel the skin away from the halves or use a spoon to scoop out the flesh.

3.     Use a potato masher or a fork to mash the avocado.

4.     Add a squeeze of lemon juice and stir through to combine.

5.     Place in a resealable bag or airtight container.

Using frozen avocado

Thawed avocado may be less creamy in texture than fresh avocado so we recommend using fresh for salads and guacamole, but frozen avocado can be used in a whole range of ways. Try it in smoothies, margaritas, to make ice-cream, in desserts, cakes and muffins.
