Kitchen Helper - How to cut a cake in half horizontally

Here’s a hack that works like magic.

If you’ve ever attempted to cut a cake in half horizontally, in order to fill it with jam and cream, or to create a multi-layer torte, you know if can go horribly wrong. Your layers can come out uneven, and your whole cake can end up leaning like the Tower of Pisa.

Here is a fail-safe method ensuring two perfectly even halves.

First, using a ruler, measure the height of your cake and mark the middle line by inserting four toothpicks at equal distance around the ‘equator’ of the cake.

Wrap a length of sewing cotton around the cake settling it on top of the toothpicks.

Cross the ends of the cotton over each other at the front of the cake, facing you, and then, holding the crossed ends in each hand, gently pull the ends away from each other.

The cotton will travel through the cake, cutting it in two perfect halves.
