Budget Helper – DIY Fruity and Fizzy Drinks

Summer is the time for warm days and balmy evenings, family barbecues, and entertaining friends. Here’s a budget tip for keeping cool, and better still, it’s a healthy swap. Read on to find out how.

Ditch the sweet fizzy sodas and make your own fruit-infused drinks to quench your summer thirst and add a stylish look to your next gathering.

Simply fill a tall glass jug with water, slices of watermelon, oranges, or cucumbers, or whole fruits in the case of berries, some slices of lemon, maybe a sprig of mint, and let it steep in the fridge for an hour or so. Add some large ice cubes before serving and you have a stylish and healthy refreshment that saves you buying expensive and sugary drinks.

Even better - add some fizz with a Soda Stream carbonator or similar – we sell them at most Hill Street stores, as well as the gas refills. Your drink is immediately elevated and much more refreshing! And an added bonus – you’re keeping single use plastic bottles out of the system.

Of course, for an adult get-together you can add a dash of Tasmanian gin or vodka for a low-calorie, summer refresher.

Alcohol is sold at Hill Street West Hobart, Lauderdale and South Hobart. Soda Streams and refills are sold at most Hill Street stores – check with your local store for availability.
