How to store and reheat cooked rice … kitchen helper
Hands up if you always cook more rice than you need? It’s something that many of us are guilty of and now we’ve got all the tips you need for how to store it and reheat it so that it’s fluffy and delicious.
You may have heard that it’s not a good idea to keep leftover rice and that’s because rice absorbs liquid when it cooks, which means that you have moist grains of rice that bacteria can easily multiply on. If you play it safe and cool your rice quickly and store it properly, you can keep those leftovers. Start by spreading leftover rice on a baking tray and put the tray in the fridge uncovered so that the rice cools quickly. When cooled (usually this takes 20 minutes), transfer the rice to an airtight container or a Ziploc bag and pop in the fridge or freezer. You can safely store rice for up to 4 days in the fridge and 3 months in the freezer.
We recommend using the microwave to reheat rice; it’s quick and if you follow our tips your rice will be nice and fluffy as good rice should be. Firstly use a shallow, microwave-safe plate or container so that the rice can be spread out to avoid clumping. Next wet a piece of paper towel with water, wring out and place it loosely on top of the rice; this will create and trap steam to make the rice soft. Microwave on half power for one minute, check and continue heating in one minute increments until it is piping hot.
