New in - Villino’s new look is sustainable and beautiful

It’s still the coffee that Tasmanians love best. Have a look at their vibrant new designs.

Stumbling upon your own company’s plastic packaging in the beautiful Tasmanian bush is an unusual way to make an important business decision.

But that’s exactly what happened to the owner of beloved Tasmanian coffee roasters Villino a few months back.

Richard Schramm was out cycling in the great outdoors when in his peripheral vision he spotted something familiar. It was an empty bag of Villino coffee in the Tasmanian bush, which must have blown in there as rubbish.

Richard felt two things simultaneously. First was “Oh wow, there’s one of our bags, all the way out here!” and the second was a deep sense that he needed to find a more sustainable alternative to Villino’s plastic packaging.

The vision to bring in an eco-friendly choice had been in Richard’s mind for a while but seeing that bag out there pushed it up into the urgent category. This was made all the more pressing due to the collapse of the soft-plastic recycling system across Australia.

After some research and testing of various options, Richard has opted for a home-compostable bag which is sustainable and still delivers optimal coffee protection.

It has a plant-based lining which offers an improved oxygen barrier and keeps coffee tasting its best for longer.

You’ll need to peel the label off the front and then pop it into your FOGO home composting bucket for collection by your participating council or add it to your own compost system.

The bags have also done away with plastic zips and valves and Villino has instead introduced a nifty timber bag clip which can be purchased separately and reused with every bag of Villino coffee.

As always Villino’s packaging is visually beautiful, with artwork by Tilly Thorne, Villino’s General Manager, who wears a number of hats in the business and has a past working as an illustrator. Tilly has also designed some whimsical line drawings for the reverse and gussets of the bags.

Villino is available at most Hill Street stores. Check with your local store for availability. Please note new compostable packaging will be available within a few weeks once previous packaging has sold out.
