Just in - Three Friends Prepared Abalone with Gochujang butter
A restaurant quality dish in 8 minutes? It’s abalone made easy.
If you love abalone but find preparing it at home a little daunting, premium Tasmanian abalone growers Three Friends have a brilliant product for you.
It’s their Three Friends Abalone with Gochujang Butter, which can be found in the freezer section of your local Hill Street store. The abalone has been removed from the shell, cleaned and lightly beaten to tenderize the meat (abalone is notoriously rubbery if not prepared correctly), then sliced and placed back in the shell, snap frozen and packed ready to cook. It’s supplied frozen for maximum freshness and convenient shelf life.
How to prepare
It's easy to prepare: simply remove the abalone from the freezer, take it out of its packaging, and place on an ovenproof tray. Divide the supplied Gochujang butter into four pieces, place a piece on top of each abalone and cook in an oven preheated to 200°C for 8 minutes. If cooking from thawed, give it 6 minutes. Then serve with a fresh wedge of lemon, and you can wow your guests with a restaurant-quality dish that takes just minutes to prepare.
Results of our taste test
For our taste test we followed the directions on the pack with a frozen pack, but did find we needed to give the abalone a few more minutes, so we finished it off under the grill for another 3-4 minutes. We’d recommend checking if after 8 minutes, and if not heated through and steaming hot, give it another 3-4 minutes either in the oven or under the grill.
The taste was great and might be described as similar to calamari, but more strongly flavoured, was slightly spicy from the Gochujang butter.
It was altogether different from other abalone we’d tried in the past: it was tender and melted in our mouths. Definitely not tough and chewy!
We’re thrilled to bring you this product, which is exclusive to Hill Street and was created in collaboration with our Executive Chef Al Dennett and the Hill Street Kitchen.
About Three Friends Abalone
Three Friends Abalone farm in Stanley, where they are nourished by the pristine waters of west Tasmania.
As the name suggests, it’s the venture of three friends, Joel, Shane and Tom, who met some years ago working on an abalone farm in Portland in Victoria, They bonded over a shared belief that abalone can be of exceptional quality while respecting the natural environment. These Three Friends now farm sustainably on land at Stanley in north-western Tasmania to produce some of the highest quality abalone in the world, nourished by the fresh pristine waters of the north-west coast.
Renowned for its exceptional texture, flavour, and nutritional value, their abalone is all-natural and carefully harvested to ensure the highest quality. It’s uniquely unbleached and retains its natural colour and flavour, offering a more authentic taste full of nutrients. It’s a very good source of selenium which is excellent for the immune system, is also low in calories, and a good source of protein, omega-3 and iodine.
