It’s love at first bite with Tasmanian Affair – read on to find out all about this foodie love story.
Mel Sullivan and her husband Michael knew they were onto something with their house-made relish, which is a staple at their café, Relish, in Launceston. A recipe handed down from Mel’s grandparents and tweaked a little by Michael to make it gluten free and vegan, it’s been served on the side of most meals and inside all the toasties at their aptly-named Relish Café since they started in the business ten years ago.
Michael, who’s pretty handy in the kitchen, and Mel, who along with Michael, had a long career in front-of-house hospitality, developed a few more products, testing them on their customers at Relish Café. Their success led Michael and Mel to launch a new brand, Tasmanian Affair, late in 2023 and the rest, as they say, is history.
Now the pair’s Salted Caramel Popcorn, OMG Muesli, Barbie Sauce and the original Relish are the hero products in their range of Tasmanian-made gourmet goodness which you can find in most Hill Street stores and some larger IGAs in the north of the state.
Their packaging is stylish and fun, playing on the love affair Mel, Michael and their customers have with food.
Tasmanian Affair’s products also made the cut into Hill Street’s Christmas hamper range, with their Barbie Sauce and Salted Caramel Popcorn going out to hamper recipients across Australia inside our Medium, Large, Deluxe, Sweet and Sweet & Savoury Christmas Hampers, which range from $69 to $199.
While Mel and Michael have ideas for new products in the future, it’s their relish which will always be their favourite, and closest to Mel’s heart as a connection to her grandparents. But, Mel says, the salted caramel popcorn is “pretty darn good too!”, and all the products are delicious in their own way.
