Love Japanese food? Here’s how to recreate your restaurant favourites at home.
If you love the fresh flavours of Japanese cooking, you can replicate restaurant-style Japanese dishes at home with Jimoto’s range of Japanese dressings and sauces.
Jimoto was created by two Aussie chefs, Max and Doug, who worked together for many years over the hibachi, slicing sashimi and serving delicious Japanese food. They decided to try to translate the taste of the professional kitchen into the home kitchen – and the Jimoto range was born.
Jimoto means “local” in Japanese and Max and Doug work with local and Japanese suppliers to create their authentic flavours.
Our favourite is the Toasted Sesame Dressing. This is Max and Doug’s take on the classic Japanese Goma dressing. Toasted Japanese sesame seeds, inaka miso and Japanese rice vinegar combine to create an earthy, nutty dressing which is great to coat noodles, as a dipping sauce for shabu shabu or fresh sashimi. It can be brushed over grilled pork cutlets or drizzled over salads or roasted vegetables.
Another delicious dressing is the Fresh Yuzu and Chili Dressing – it combines local Australian green chillies, Japanese chillies, fresh yuzu juice and Japanese tamari to create a zingy flavour which is perfect drizzled on salads, served with a BBQ chicken, prawns, sashimi, dumplings or roast veggies – in fact just about anything.
Jimoto’s Miso Hot Sauce elevates any dish or snack with a few drops. A blend of Australian chillies, inaka miso and garlic, it’s great over gyoza, ramen, tempura, grilled meat, seafood, rice and noodles.
Umami Powder Is a seasoning made from dried shiitake mushrooms that adds depths of umami flavour to anything it touches. Completely vegan, this powder can be used as a dry-rub for steaks or roast chicken, as a sprinkle for salads, and a substitute for dashi powder to make a delicate savoury soup base. If you think of it as a more highly flavoured alternative to salt, there’s almost nothing this versatile Umami Powder can’t elevate.
