How to fix a smelly fridge … kitchen helper

By their very nature, fridges are places where bad smells can happen.  Even if you find the culprit (half-used, forgotten carton of cream anyone?) these odours can hang around like a ... well, a bad smell. Here are two ways to be rid of them.

Ok, so first eliminate the obvious – throw out whatever has gone off and wipe out that area of the fridge in case smelly liquid is sitting there.Plastics in the fridge shelving and in the seals around the doors can absorb these odours even once you have removed the source of the smell.

Two everyday household ingredients can fix this:

1.   Ground coffee
Most people like the smell of coffee and it can help neutralise lingering fridge smells.  Half fill a small glass jar with used dry ground coffee and place in the fridge with the lid off. The dry coffee will absorb smells and release a pleasing coffee aroma.  Note that other foods stored near the coffee may take on this smell so don’t store unpackaged foods near the coffee or wrap them to ensure they are airtight.

2.   Bicarb
It seems bicarbonate of soda has a myriad of uses – here’s another one! Similar to the ground coffee, half fill a jar with bicarb and place it in the fridge without the lid. It will absorb odours without giving off any odour of its own.
