Five of the best … plant-based ingredients
Plant-based eating has exploded in popularity in recent years. Irrespective of your dietary preferences there are a number of plant-based ingredients that you can incorporate into your diet that add fabulous flavour. Here’s five of the best.
Chickpeas
We all know chickpeas make the basis of a great hummus, but they are also an ideal ingredient for bulking out dishes. Rich in fibre and protein, they keep you feeling full for longer so are perfect for casseroles, soups and stews. And if you use tinned chickpeas, you can whip the liquid from the tin (called aquafaba) to make meringues.
Peanut butter
Looking for a simple way to add flavour to sauces? Or a replacement for butter in biscuit recipes? Peanut butter is the answer. Versatile, protein-rich and super tasty, it is an excellent plant-based ingredient. Try mixing peanut butter with soy sauce for a simple but tasty stir-fry sauce.
Soy sauce
Flavour abounds in soy sauce so a little goes a long way. Adding it to gravy or bolognaise sauce will bring a new level of depth and richness to your cooking.
Smoked paprika
Achieve a smoky barbecue flavour with smoked-paprika. Added to sauces, soups and roasted veg, smoked paprika will bring a sweet and subtle smokiness.
Coconut Milk
The best way to add creaminess to a dish without using dairy is with coconut-milk. Versatile, it can be used in a variety of dishes including sauces and curries and it also works well in dairy-free baking.
