Beautiful blooms … our top 5 tips for making cut flowers last longer

What occasion cannot be made better by flowers? “Thank you”, “I love you”, “Congratulations”, and “I’m sorry” are made even more special with the presentation of a beautiful bouquet. And because flowers are such a wonderful addition to your home, you want to make them last as long as possible. Our florists have given us their top tips to extend the life of vase flowers and keep them looking their best for as long as possible.

1.              Change the water in the vase/vessel regularly to avoid bacterial growth; every 2-3 days is preferable.

2.              Use snips, secateurs or a sharp kitchen knife to trim the stems of the flowers. Using scissors can damage the stems, which will inhibit water absorption.

3.              Keep flowers in a cool environment and out of direct sunlight.

4.              Keep flowers away from the heater and air conditioner.

5.              Our expert florists also suggest keeping cut flowers away from your fruit bowl. Many fruits produce high amounts of ethylene which can speed up the deterioration of your blooms.

Now that you know to take care of your cut flowers it’s time to treat yourself to a beautiful bunch “just because”. Head to our refreshed Hill Street Home website to order.
