Homestyle Hot Chocolate

As the Autumn chill hits, there’s nothing better than a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up. This version strikes the perfect balance of chocolatey goodness and rich creaminess.

How long will it take?

15 minutes

What’s the serving size?

Serves 6

What do I need?

  • 100 g caster sugar
  • 125 mL water
  • 125 g dark chocolate, broken into small pieces
  • 300 mL cream
  • 75 g cocoa powder, plus extra to serve
  • 1 litre full cream milk, divided
  • Mini marshmallows, to serve

How do I make it?

  1. Add caster sugar and water to a saucepan over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Keep on the heat for 2 – 3 additional minutes, or until the mixture starts to thicken slightly.
  2. Add chocolate pieces to the sugar mix and stir until the chocolate melts. Pour in cream, stir, and add cocoa and 80 mL of milk. Use a whisk to combine the ingredients, then remove from the heat and set aside.
  3. In a separate saucepan heat the remaining milk over medium-low heat so that it is warmed through but do not allow it to boil.
  4. Pour the chocolate mixture into the milk and whisk to combine. Heat until the mixture is about to boil, then remove from heat and pour into mugs.
  5. Garnish generously with mini marshmallows, sprinkle with cocoa powder and serve.
