So many choices … our guide to picking the perfect Christmas ham
If you’ve had a look at our Christmas online store or picked up a copy of our Festive Food Order Form, you’ll know that when it comes to Christmas ham, you’re spoilt for choice. We have a ham to suit everyone, from a small couples Christmas to a large and loud extended family and friends gathering.
Wursthaus hams have been a part of Christmas at Hill Street for a very, very long time. We love the moist, tender texture and delicious flavour that is produced by the traditional smoking technique used at Wursthaus. The Wursthaus Leg Ham is available in a 5.5 to 7 kilogram size and is great value for money.
If you’re looking for a larger sized ham then the Scottsdale Leg Hams (smoked by Wursthaus) are for you. Available in sizes 7 to 8 kilograms, 8 to 9 kilograms, or 9+ kilograms, these are a flavoursome ham with the renowned Scottsdale quality.
At the other end of the size scale are our mini-ham options. Choose from the Wursthaus Mini Ham that is approximately 1.5 to 2 kilograms in size and will feed a few guests, or the Scottsdale Mini Ham which is our smallest ham at 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms and is perfect for two to three people.
Also available this year are the famous Mount Gnomon Leg Hams, Hill Street Glazed Leg Hams, Wursthaus Boneless Leg Ham, Scottsdale Dry Cured Boneless Leg Ham, and Cygnet Butcher Nitrate Free Half Leg Ham.
Mount Gnomon Farm rests against the Dial Range in north-west Tassie and specialises in the rare breed Wessex Saddleback pigs. This ham is a traditional style with marbled, tasty meat and a thick layer of fat.
If you’re looking for a time-saver this Christmas, then our Hill Street Glazed Leg Hams are just the thing. Glazed by our Chef for you, they are table-ready and absolutely delicious. If you prefer a ham without the bone, the Wursthaus Boneless Leg Ham is the perfect choice, or opt for a Scottsdale Dry Cured Boneless Leg Ham that has been dry cured resulting in natural, yet intense flavours.
The Cygnet Butcher Nitrate Free Half Leg Ham is free of artificial nitrates. It is hand-crafted using authentic and traditional methods to produce a ham that has a distinct pork flavour. Because the ham is nitrate free it does look different to traditional hams with the pale pink meat changing to natural grey and brown colours when exposed to air. This is a normal feature of nitrate free hams and does not mean that there is anything wrong with the ham.
And of course what would a Christmas ham be without the glaze? Our 500 millilitre Hill Street Ham Glaze features flavours of brown sugar, orange and mustard. It comes packaged in a glass jar with full instructions from our Chef on how to glaze your ham at ham.
