Kitchen helper – How to stop seafood smells
With summer in full swing we’re loving the plentiful seafood on offer at all our stores. Fish and prawns on the barbecue, oysters with a cold Tassie sparkling wine, Tassie crayfish done any way you like - it’s a delicious time of the year.
Preparing and eating seafood can leave you with a smelly problem however.
Fish heads, tails, bones, prawn, crayfish and oyster shells are all a little … pungent a few days afterwards.
And if bin day is not for several days, you have a very smelly problem on your hands and in your wheelie bin.
Here’s how to prevent it.
Put all your fresh seafood scraps in a clear compostable plastic bag, tie up tightly and then wrap this in newspaper. Put it in the freezer. The bag will keep any liquid from seeping through, and the newspaper makes the package easily identifiable in the freezer. You’ll have a frozen, non-smelly and much more hygienic package to put into your wheelie bin* on rubbish night.
*Green or FOGO bin in participating Council areas.
