Kitchen Helper: Apple Tips

With new season’s apples now arriving in store, it’s the best time of the year to enjoy Tassie’s delicious apples.
Here are our five favourite tips for using apples, and keeping them fresh and crunchy:
1. Keep them in the crisper: it’s your own little coolstore and will keep your apples fresh for 6-8 weeks or longer, rather than 1-2 weeks at room temperature.
2. Don’t store them with other fruit: apples release ethylene gas which speeds up ripening and will spoil other nearby fruit.
3. Toss apple slices in lemon or pineapple juice to stop them from browning.
4. Use the rubber band method if packing sliced apple in a lunch box – slice in quarters or eighths and them reassemble in the original shape, holding it together with a strong rubber band. The cut surfaces won’t be exposed to air, so won’t go brown.
5. Reduce nausea: It’s said that eating green apples like a Granny Smith, can help with nausea associated with morning and motion sickness.
