Our Five Favourite Ways to Feel French on Bastille Day

Read on for our five favourite ways to feel French.

For the French, the 14th of July is a day to celebrate freedom and equality. The day commemorates the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 and was a turning point of the French Revolution.

Today the day is celebrated with military displays and parades, community festivities, and vibrant parties. Of course, food is a feature of this celebration.

Make your Bastille Day a little more French with these classic French dishes and wish any other Francophiles Bonne Fête!

1.   French Onion Soup

Traditional and rustic, French Onion Soup is a warming and delicious meal during winter and will require 2kg of brown onions and an afternoon of caramelising and cooking – but believe us, it’s worth it.

2.   Crepes Suzette

Crêpes Suzette is a classic French indulgence with flavours of caramelised sugar, butter and orange. This makes an exquisite breakfast or a decadent dessert.

3.   Coq au Vin

Coq au Vin Blanc, our version of the classic French dish, features white wine rather than red to create a more subtle flavour that allows all the ingredients to shine. It’s great on a cold night with mashed potatoes and green beans, or a crusty baguette.

4.   Croissants and a Café Au Lait

Keep it simple with a nod to the French national day by picking up a freshly baked, buttery Pigeon Whole croissant from your nearest Hill Street store and ordering a takeaway café au lait (a café latte in our Italian-orientated café scene here in Australia). If no-one’s watching, break off a bit of your croissant and dunk it in your coffee, as the French do.
Here’s another way we love enjoying croissants, in this recipe for Baked Croissant French Toast. Ooh la la!

5.   Croque Monsieur

This is the ultimate ham and cheese toastie with a huge dose of French indulgence. Use a top-quality leg ham like our Wursthaus leg ham, some oozy Gruyere, and Dijon mustard of course.
