Hill Street Heroes - Devonport 10th Birthday Edition - Steve
As part of our 10th birthday celebrations at Hill Street Devonport, we’re profiling some of our long serving Hill Street Heroes from that store.
Steve Longmore is now our Chief Operating Officer and started with Hill Street in 2015 to establish and head up our then ‘new’ stores in the north of the state. Steve has put in an exceptional amount of work and passion into creating three wonderful stores, leading and nurturing our teams there, and becoming a committed member of the North West Coast community.
Steve was awarded his 10 Years Long Service Pin at our inaugural Hill Street Milestone Gala Dinner in August and won the Legacy Award as the person who has made the most exceptional long-term impact on the business. Congratulations Steve!
We caught up with Steve recently to talk about his journey with Hill Street since he joined us in 2015, and what it’s meant to him to work at Hill Street all these years.
What was your first role at Hill Street and when did you start?
I joined in 2015 as part of the Hill Street team heading up the north and buying across the group.
Which stores have you worked in during your time with Hill Street?
Latrobe, Devonport and Longford.
What has kept you at Hill Street all these years?
What I love most about Hill Street is that, despite how much we’ve grown, we’ve stayed true to who we’ve always been. We’re still a humble family business that passionately champions customer service, proudly supports Tasmanian suppliers, and puts family values at the heart of everything we do.
Funniest workplace moment?
There have been plenty of funny, and a few very embarrassing, moments at Hill Street over the years. One of the funniest has to be when Euan decided he was going to chase me down and give me a cheeky Christmas kiss. Let’s just say I ran faster than I ever have in my life. To this day, I still reckon it was one of the quickest sprints I’ve ever done!
What is something only a long-serving Hill Street team member would understand?
One thing I believe only a long-standing Hill Street team member truly understands is just how incredibly hard the Nikitaras family works. No task is ever too big or too small, they simply do whatever needs to be done. They genuinely care about every member of the team and are incredibly generous, making Hill Street a wonderful place to work.
Favourite Hill Street memory:
One of my favourite memories at Hill Street was launching our very first Producers Night. It was incredibly special to see our community and local suppliers come together, celebrating everything Hill Street stands for. It perfectly reflected our passion for supporting Tasmanian producers, building genuine relationships, and creating memorable experiences for our customers.
Which Hill Street person has had the biggest impact on you, and why?
I think that’s almost impossible for me to answer because there have been so many people who have had an impact on me. I’ve loved working closely with each of them, learning from their unique talents and gaining a deeper understanding of what makes them exceptional. More than anything, every one of those experiences has helped shape who I am as a leader, and for that I’ll always be incredibly grateful.
What are three words colleagues would use to describe you?
This is a difficult one, and I’m not entirely sure what the three words would be. However, I’d like to think they would be the following: selfless, challenging, kind.
What's your hidden talent?
I try incredibly hard to put others before myself. In every decision I make, I strive to lead with kindness, care and compassion, loving unconditionally and always choosing forgiveness.
Thank you Steve, for your incredible contribution to Hill Street, and the hard work and passion you bring to your teams and our customers every day!
