Five serves of grain foods a day is the recommendation for good health and protection from cancers. A serve is:

  • 1 cup of cereal
  • ½ cup of muesli
  • 1 slice of bread
  • ½ a bread roll
  • 4 or 5 crispbreads
  • 1 scone
  • 1 cup of cooked pasta
  • ½ a cup of cooked rice

To boost your grain intake:

  • Choose the breakfast cereal with “wholegrain” at the top of the list of ingredients
  • Use muesli as a crumble on desserts
  • Chose wholegrain breads
  • Put wholegrain bread in the blender and then keep the crumbs in the freezer for high-fibre toppings and coatings
  • Snack on popcorn
  • Use brown rice in preference to white
  • Use unpearled barley instead of pearl barley
  • Use wholemeal pasta
  • Try some of those polenta recipes you keep seeing
  • Make pilaf and tabouli
