Baby food has become a new topic of interest and we’ve learned a little about the advantages of going organic when it comes to what we feed our little ones.
Many parents who may not be completely sold on organic diet for themselves insist on organics during pregnancy and at least the first year at least of a child’s life. In Britain, while only 2% of adults regularly consume only organically grown food, more than a third of babies are raised on organic food. In Germany, organics hold almost all of the market for processed baby food.
Mostly parents chose organic foods for what they don’t have – no traces of pesticides, herbicides, artificial additives or genetic modification.
A baby’s digestive systems work more efficiently than an adult’s, which makes them more vulnerable to toxins, and young kidneys are not as proficient at excreting harmful substances. Also, because babies eat a much narrower range of foods than adults and consume a greater proportion of fluids, they can receive a higher exposure to toxins.
The five foods that feature most prominently in infant diets are produced organically in Australia – milk, apples, oranges, rice and bananas. Avocados, which, along with bananas, are a great weaning food, are also often available organically. Subject to the seasons, all are available at Hill Street Grocer.
When your baby is old enough to eat meat, our range meats that are free of hormone growth promotants from Vermey’s, and poultry from Nichols, is the best choice. We also stock many fresh and dried organic fruits, organic vegetables, milk and yoghurt, Heinz organic baby foods and Oz Organics baby cereal and rice.
